Embracing Fall and Letting Go

As the vibrant greens of summer gracefully give way to the golden hues of fall, we find ourselves in a season of change and transition. The air turns crisp, the days grow shorter, and nature whispers a profound truth: everything has its time. Fall reminds us that letting go is a necessary part of life’s cycle, and with each release, we make space for something new. Just as trees shed their leaves, we too are invited to let go of what no longer serves us, so we can embrace the sweetness that life continues to offer.

The Art of Letting Go

Letting go is an act of trust. It is an acknowledgment that clinging to the old—whether it be ideas, habits, relationships, or fears—can hold us back from experiencing the fullness of life. Just as the trees trust that new growth will come after the release of their leaves, we too must trust in the divine flow of life. It may feel uncertain or even uncomfortable, but letting go is a spiritual practice, one that invites us to surrender to something greater than ourselves.

In Unity, we often speak of "letting go and letting God." This doesn’t mean giving up, but rather it means releasing control and allowing the infinite wisdom of the Universe to guide our lives. When we release our need to control the outcome of every situation, we create space for Spirit to work in ways we might never have imagined. Letting go becomes an act of faith, a deep inner knowing that we are held in the loving embrace of the Divine.

Embracing the Sweetness of Life

As we let go, we are also called to embrace. Fall is not only about releasing the old; it is also a time to savor the sweetness of life’s harvest. Just as apples ripen on the tree and pumpkins are gathered from the vine, this season invites us to reflect on the abundance that already exists in our lives. What blessings are you harvesting in this season? What fruits of your labor, spiritual or otherwise, are ready for you to enjoy?

The sweetness of life is all around us, waiting to be noticed and appreciated. It may be found in the warmth of a loved one’s embrace, the beauty of a sunset, or the quiet stillness of an autumn morning. As we let go of what no longer serves us, we open ourselves up to fully experience and appreciate these moments of sweetness.

To embrace the sweetness of life is to live in gratitude. When we focus on the good in our lives, we naturally attract more of it. Gratitude transforms our perspective, allowing us to see that even in times of challenge or change, there is much to be thankful for. As the trees let go of their leaves, they do so without fear, trusting that new growth will come. So too, can we trust that as we release, we are making room for new blessings, new opportunities, and new joys to flow into our lives.

A Time for Reflection

Fall is also a time for reflection. Just as the earth prepares for winter by slowing down and going inward, we too can use this season to turn our attention inward. What have you been holding onto that no longer serves you? Are there beliefs, habits, or fears that are weighing you down? This is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and gently let go.

In Unity, we recognize that the spiritual journey is a continual process of growth and transformation. As we move through this fall season, let us be mindful of the changes occurring within us as well as around us. Just as the natural world is in transition, we too are always evolving. Embrace this season as an opportunity to grow, to deepen your spiritual practice, and to align more fully with your divine nature.

Mark Nepo, in his poetic wisdom, often writes about themes of letting go, surrender, and spiritual transformation. Here's a small snippet inspired by his work:

"To let go is to release the grip, on what no longer fits in our hand. Like

leaves falling when their time has passed, we must trust that what is coming will land."

This reflects his gentle approach to letting go, acknowledging the natural cycle of holding on and releasing. Nepo’s work encourages embracing the unknown with trust and openness. You can explore more of his reflections in his books like The Book of Awakening or The Way Under the Way.

Final Thoughts

As we journey through this season of fall, may we all embrace the process of letting go with grace and courage. Let us trust that in releasing the old, we are making space for the new. And may we never forget to savor the sweetness of life, for it is always present, ready to be embraced in every moment.
