ADULT EDUCATION

ADULT EDUCATION, 2018

Adult education—it makes life better!

We are deeply committed to offering a program which is relevant, provocative, proven, daring, and worthwhile!

In each class, you may expect time in the silence, experiential, relevant and hands-on exploration of the subject matter, small group discussion and lecture (although our Facilitators minimize lecture).

And although you may enroll in any class at any time, we recommend Unity Basics as a great place to start!

111 UNITY BASICS: A GREAT PLACE TO START

(Required for membership in UIL)

Text: The Five Principles, Ellen Debenport

5 weeks, January 2nd – January 30th

2 weeks, October 6th and October 13th

Understand the five principles or tenets of Unity, principles or tenets which “reflect the laws of the universe” and address the fundamental questions:

  • What is this greater Presence that we sense around us?
  • Who and what are we?
  • Why do things happen in our lives the way they do?
  • How can we communicate with this Presence?
  • What are we here to do?

Not only does this class provide real tools for daily living (putting the “practical” in “practical spirituality,”) it positions each student for maximal understanding from later classes.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

(16 weeks; prerequisites for completion: Personal Development Program)

211 WORLD RELIGIONS

Text: The World's Religions, Houston Smith

4 weeks, February 6th – February 27th

This course offers hands-on experience of the practices and rituals of great spiritual traditions of our planet.  Bolster your understanding, ignite your curiosity and heighten your respect of our world’s great traditions and its people as you better understand the context in which Unity exists.  See your world differently!

212 THE BIBLE AGAIN

Text: Reading the Bible Again for the First Time, Marcus J. Borg

4 weeks, March 6th – March 27th

One of the vital challenges facing thoughtful people today is how to read the Bible faithfully without abandoning our sense of truth, history and common sense!  It is in the fertile middle ground between fundamentalism and Atheism that we experience the fruits of this important collection of writings.

213 THE HISTORY OF NEW THOUGHT

Text: Spirits in Rebellion, Braden Smith

4 weeks, May 8th – May 29th

Explore New Thought genealogy from the pioneering works of the mental healing and prosperity movements of the mid 1800’s through the rise of the Transcendentalist thought through the beginnings of Unity itself.  Explore how these early ideas still apply to our current spiritual journeys.

214 THE ESSENTIAL CHARLES FILLMORE

Text: The Essential Charles Fillmore, compiled by James Gaither

4 weeks, June 5th – June 26th

This course examines the life, teachings, and works of this larger-than-life individual.  Explore fundamental Unity principles, the Twelve Powers and the metaphysical practices.  Personal experience and relevance are the goals of this experience.  We will use reading, discussion, reflection/writing, and practice to bring to life what Mr. Fillmore called “practical Christianity.”

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

(17 weeks; prerequisites for completion: Unity Basics)

312 LIFE OF PRAYER

(Required for service as a Prayer Chaplain or on any prayer team)

5 weeks (SEE-accredited), April 3rd – May 1st

Prayer is a cornerstone of any Unity ministry.  And while Unity offers a specific formula for prayer, Unity doesn’t presume any exclusivity to the many ways one can work in consciousness!  Presented by the Prayer Chaplains, this experiential course explores prayer and meditation as understood and practiced within various world religions.

313 THE FOURTH PRINCIPLE: LIVING THE POWERFUL LIFE

5 weeks, July 3rd – July 31st

The fourth of Unity’s five tenets encourages PRAYER as a powerful, spiritual tool!  Prayer is effective to the degree to which it changes us – our perception of ourselves, our beliefs about the world in which we live, our fundamental ideas about God Itself.  Explore this important shift from prayers designed to change God, to prayers designed to change you!  Students will have the opportunity to form ongoing prayer partnerships during this class.  The practice of affirmations and denials will be included.
